LARGO, Fla. - Authorities say a Pinellas County Jail inmate stuffed wet toilet paper down his cell mate's throat and strangled him.

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says 48-year-old Kelly Damon Harding died of asphyxiation early Sunday. The death occurred shortly after 28-year-old Scott Alexander Greenberg told other inmates he planned to be executed on death row rather than spending his life in prison.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Harding died in the same way Greenberg's girlfriend was killed almost a year ago. Greenberg faced second-degree murder charges in the girlfriend's death.

Authorities say the cell wasn't monitored and the incident occurred minutes before a deputy performed a routine check.
The two became cell mates on Saturday night after being placed in protective custody because of aggressive behavior at the jail.
