DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Police say officers shot and wounded a man holding a knife to a woman at a Daytona Beach home early Wednesday morning, and the woman was also struck in the arm by the gunfire.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said officers called to the home on Magnolia Avenue, just blocks away from Bethune-Cookman University, heard a woman screaming for help. When they forced their way into the home, they found Jermaine Green holding knife on a woman.

Chitwood says Green "begins to press the knife into her chest and officers were left with no other choice than to open fire."

Police say Green was hit several times while the woman was shot once in the arm.

Green is in critical condition at a hospital.  Chitwood says the woman "appears to be doing OK."
No further details were immediately available.

FDLE was called to the scene to take over the investigation.
