The driver made it out safely, but the cab of the big rig was destroyed by fire.

"I saw some smoke in the tires and I stopped and fire started," Krnear Hyec told Channel 4. "I don't know what it could be -- brakes or something else."

Traffic was slow in the area through most of the morning rush hour and drivers were asked to avoid the area if possible. West Beaver Street was suggested as an alternate route.

"I was very scared -- 15 years I've been in a truck, first time I see this situation. It's very scary," Hyec said.

Traffic was backed up more than 2 miles to beyond U.S. 301 until the accident was cleared after 9:30 a.m.
