Copper thieves hit Springfield church for third time

Pastor: Copper theft from air conditioners cost church $50,000

SPRINGFIELD, Fla. - The timing of a church break-in has a Springfield pastor believing his congregation is blessed.  The air conditioning units stolen only blow cold air, so they won't have to be replaced until Spring.

"Whoever did this, they're not rookies. They knew what they were doing," said Coley Williams, pastor of Springfield Christian Church.

Williams said this is the third time in five years his church air conditioners have been ripped off by copper thieves. He guesses whoever did it made off with 20 or 30 pounds of copper.

The church is located on West 9th Avenue. Members are not happy about the crime in their neighborhood.

"Well, I think he's scum. Low down and dirty scum, you know, to steal from the house of The Lord," Johnny Alexander said.

Pastor Coley strongly believes whoever stole the copper tore through a fence to get it, causing the church a total loss of an estimated $50,000.

"I had to do something with my anger so I decided to use my anger as a passion and as a teaching tool for the people of Springfield and to show that even in the midst of a storm, we can remain calm and focused," Pastor Coley said.

Two surveillance cameras overlooking the area did not catch whoever stole the copper.

Anyone with any information that could help police make an arrest in this case, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. You can remain anonymous and are eligible for a $1,000 cash reward if an arrest is made.
