JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The 2014 election season is officially underway, with early voting going on in every county in the August 26 Florida Primary.

This is the first election since the Duval County Supervisor of Elections office moved from Gateway Mall to its new location in a Northside office complex.

One of the things Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland said before the office moved was that it would keep an early voting site at the Gateway Mall location, and it remains among one of the 18 places in Duval County to cast ballots through next Saturday.

Hollands said turnout is typically low for primary. He expects about 20 percent of registered voters to cast ballots.

After the first two days of early voting in Duval County, here were no major issues at the polling locations and just over 2,400 people voted.

Almost 20,000 people had submitted absentee ballots in Duval County by Friday, but Holland says some are making mistakes on their ballot.

"It's School Board District 2. You can only choose one, but when they read District 2, they vote for two candidates," Holland said. "It's very important to read the instructions. Make sure you only vote for one candidate in all of the races."

Holland said that if voting in person the machine will reject that a ballot and you can correct it. With an absentee ballot the mistake vote has to be thrown out.

"We can count the other votes in other races that have been cast correctly, but we can't count an over-vote or split that vote to all candidates."

Holland is said that even though turnout is low, his staff still prepares like they do for every election.

"It really gets everything going. It's a live election for us, we count every ballot but it also tests everything out for the general election coming up November 4th," Holland said.
