Portion of Jax Beach pier could reopen before summer 2018

Pier damaged in 2 hurricanes could take 2 years to fully fix

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – The Jacksonville Beach Fishing Pier should be ready to reopen before the busy summer season next year -- at least part of it anyway.

Engineers told City Council members and Public Works staff at a special meeting Wednesday that the portion of the pier closest to the shore will be able to reopen in five to six months.

The city began repair work before Hurricane Irma after allocating $800,000 to fix the problems from Hurricane Mathew.

But Irma tore up more of the pier.

Engineers said Wednesday that they are working on a new design on the furthest point of the pier that extends out in the ocean. They want it to be higher and stronger, so it can withstand the storms better.

There's no cost estimate available yet for the planned improvements, but the project could take two years.

City of Jacksonville officials said the current repairs will cost about $750,000, according to news partner WJCT.
