Man, 34, killed in overnight crash on Fort Caroline Road

Car hits utility pole; road reopened hours after police began investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 34-year-old man is dead after his car crashed into a pole on Fort Caroline Road early Friday morning, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police received the call around 3:20 a.m. and responded to the crash in the 9500 block of Fort Caroline at Spanish Bluff Drive. It's unknown when the crash actually occurred. It was called in by a driver who happened to pass by, police said.

According to JSO, Earnest Jones was driving a BMW east approaching Spanish Bluff when he lost control and his car left the road, went airborne and struck a concrete utility pole.

Jones died at the scene.

Police are still investigating what caused Jones to lose control.

Fort Caroline Road remained closed in the area of Spanish Bluff Drive until just before 10 a.m.
