Man kills self after police standoff

Man threatened wife after armed domestic dispute

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man is dead after police believe he shot himself after a standoff with SWAT officers, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Shortly before 11:00 p.m. Friday night, patrol officers responded to an armed domestic dispute in the 3100 block of Fort Jackson Drive.

According to JSO, it had been reported that a husband had threatened his wife with a handgun following an argument.

During the course of the incident, he also threatened to kill himself with the handgun.

After verifying the incident, responding patrol officers and supervisors called out the SWAT Team and negotiators because they believed the suspect was still inside the residence.

An arrest warrant was obtained and SWAT officers and negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect using the telephone and amplified voice communications from outside the residence. They were never able to make contact with the suspect.

JSO says entry was made into the residence and a male subject, believed to be involved in the original incident, was found to be deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

SWAT medics were present and attempted to attend to the man but he was already deceased.

At that point a homicide call-out was initiated and homicide detectives will continue to investigate the case from this point forward, according to JSO.

SWAT officers did not fire any shots at the scene nor did they hear a shot fired from inside.
