JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Police are searching for suspects accused of shooting into a car Sunday, injuring a 37-year-old man while he was driving on Interstate 95 just south of the Trout River.

Alfred Maurice Simpson told detectives he was behind the wheel near the Golfair Boulevard exit just before 11 p.m. when someone in another car shot at him. He lost control of his car and crashed on the side of the road.

Officers called to the scene found an unoccupied white car with a significant amount of blood inside crashed and rolled over on the shoulder of the highway. Officers reported finding a significant amount of blood inside the car.

A witness told police that the man behind the wheel was picked up by someone in another vehicle. Police said an off-duty officer at UF Health Jacksonville reported that Simpson arrived at the emergency room with serious gunshot wounds from this incident.

Simpson told police that a friend in another car transported him to the hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.

JSO said the suspects in this incident are unknown and still at large. There is no suspect vehicle description.

"We don't know what type of situation this was," said Gil Smith, News4Jax crime and safety expert. "We don't know if they knew the people, if this was road rage. If someone is driving aggressively towards you, or giving you negative gestures, you just ignore them or slow down."

Anyone with information about the second vehicle involved is encouraged to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office or Crimestoppers at 866-845-TIPS.

"You don't have to have the full description of the car. It may just be the color of the car, or a partial tag information," Smith said. "You don't need the full tag, just a few letters or numbers and if it matches the type of vehicle you saw, then that would help them put that together and locate that vehicle."
