JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of a deadly crash of a motorcycle trying to avoid hitting a garbage truck early Thursday morning in Mandarin.

Police said a Waste Pro garbage truck was pulling out of the Village Green complex of townhouses at 6:35 a.m. when a motorcycle southbound on Old St. Augustine Road went down trying to avoid hitting the truck.

The motorcyclist, 25-year-old Robert Bentley III, died at the scene of the crash.

Police said the driver of the garbage truck failed to see the motorcycle and pulled into its path.Fog may have been a factor, according to police.

Police said Bentley was not wearing a helmet.

Both southbound lanes of Old St. Augustine Road just south of Crown Point Road were detoured to San Jose Boulevard until just after 11 a.m.
