JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Traffic homicide detectives are investigating an accident that killed a pedestrian on Riverside Avenue at Stonewall Street early Thursday morning.
About 4:40 a.m. the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office dispatched officers to Riverside Avenue, near Jackson Street, and eventually learned two vehicles had struck 59-year-old Armanodo Calvo.
"We had a Hyundai SUV traveling southbound on Riverside Avenue," said Sgt. Donald Washington. "She had a green light and was attempting to make a left turn on Jackson Avenue, and in the midst of her turn she hit an object, which turned out to be a pedestrian. She didn't know where he came from."
Washington said when that driver hit Calvo, it knocked him into the northbound lanes of Riverside Avenue. The driver stopped to call 911 when another vehicle was traveling toward Calvo.
"A vehicle that was traveling northbound also struck the pedestrian and also had a green light," Washington said. "That female didn't see the pedestrian in the roadway. She thought that she hit a box. She pulled to the next intersection to see what was under her car."
Police said Calvo was dragged from the back of the vehicle, about a block.
"At the time of the crash it was dark and we don't know which direction that pedestrian was coming from, but all indications that from witnesses is that both vehicles had green lights," Washington said.
Police said neither driver appeared to be impaired.
All northbound lanes of Riverside Avenue were closed from Forest Street to Stonewall Street for hours. Police allowed entrances to the YMCA and the Haskell Company building to reopen by 8 a.m., with the entire scene cleared and all lanes reopened by 9:15 a.m.
