Fla. students drinking less soda, watching less TV

Survey also finds Florida teenagers exercising more

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida high schoolers are getting healthier, according to state health officials.

A survey of 6,089 students in 73 high schools found the number of students who drank soda one or more times daily dropped from 31 percent in 2007 to 22 percent in 2013.

At the same time, the number of students who exercised for an hour during five of the past seven days increased from 38 to nearly 44 percent. And the number of students who watched three or more hours of television on an average school day went from 40 percent to 31 percent.

The Florida Department of Health and the Florida Department of Education are working to create school environments that help students make healthier choices, such as drinking more water and staying active.
