Man charged with pointing laser at motorists

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - A 22-year-old central Florida man is accused of pointing a laser light at a police officer's car.

The officer pulled over the car Walter Nevarez was riding in early Monday. He's charged with pointing a laser at a driver and was released from jail after posting bail.

Police say Nevarez told them he'd purchased the laser hours earlier and admitted to pointing it at oncoming cars. He started crying and apologized when the officer told him the action was a felony.

Nevarez told The Daytona Beach News-Journal that he's got a clean record and didn't mean to point it in the eyes of motorists.

Earlier this year the FBI launched a campaign to make the public aware of the consequences of pointing lasers at motorists or pilots.
