Man steals $300 from Girl Scouts selling cookies

Clermont police search for thief; Businesses plan to support girls

CLERMONT, Fla. – Police are looking for a man who stole cookie cash from a Girl Scouts troop.

The theft happened Saturday outside the Blockbuster video store off Citrus Tower Boulevard in Clermont.

Two middle-school Girl Scouts and their troop leader, Lynette Baker, were closing up their booth when a man pretended to be a last-minute customer.  Instead, he snatched their money box, stealing nearly $300.

"I need a policeman. I'm with a Girl Scout booth at Citrus Tower Blockbuster. We were just robbed," Baker said in a 911 call.

In the background of the call, the girls can be heard crying.

"I honestly thought he was going to turn around and come back, I mean, it was just so unbelievable that somebody would actually steal from little girls," said Baker.  "It's just so unbelievable that it could possibly happen.  You hear stories every year, this one got robbed, that one got robbed, but you never think that it's going to be you."

It's believed the man left the shopping plaza in a PT Cruiser.  A detailed description of the man was not released, but Clermont police are working to put together a composite sketch.

Local businesses said they would like to hold a car wash to help the girls.
