Police: Woman, dog attacked by 2 pit bulls on Fernandina Beach

Police say they're looking for owner of tan pit bulls

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Officers are searching for a woman with two pit bulls that bit another woman and her dog while walking on Fernandina Beach last week, the Police Department said.

The woman who was bitten told police she wasn't able to find out if the pit bulls had a vaccination history.

According to the Fernandina Beach Police Department, that woman's husband told officers he and his wife went to Beach Access 28 Friday afternoon to go for a walk on the beach with their dog. The man said when they let their dog off the leash to go for a swim, two tan pit bulls came running up, biting both his wife and their dog.

The couple described the owner of the pit bulls as a middle-aged brunette woman with short hair. They said her pit bulls both had red leashes dragging behind them.

According to Nassau County beach rules, dogs aren't allowed on the beach without a proper leash.

The couple told police the dogs' owner didn’t answer them when they asked for her name, and was last seen quickly walking away from the beach with her dogs.

The identity of the dogs' owner is unknown.

Police said the pit bulls bit the woman on her left arm, ripping the skin, and she's starting a series of rabies shots.

Many dog owners told News4Jax on Monday that they were alarmed and concerned by the incident.
