New diverging diamond interchange coming to Nassau County

New interchange will be constructed at I-95, A1A

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Transportation will begin construction on a new intersection improvement project that will add bringing a diverging diamond interchange to Interstate 95 at A1A in Nassau County, officials announced Wednesday.

The work will include the widen of 2.2 miles of A1A from west of Interstate 95 to west of Still Quarters Road, widening ramps at the interchange and reconstruction of the interchange in a diverging diamond configuration.

A diverging diamond is a type of interchange in which the two directions of traffic below an overpass briefly drive on the opposite side of the road. The FDOT said the new interchange will promote added efficiency with only two clearance intervals -- the time it takes for traffic signals to change from green to yellow to red -- instead of the six or more found in other interchange designs.

The widening project seeks to increase the road from four lanes to six lanes and includes raised medians, bicycle lanes, curbs and gutters, sidewalks and high mast lighting.

Entrances to area businesses could be affected during construction. The FDOT will display temporary signage to help access the businesses.

The project is scheduled to begin next week and completion is expected by the summer of 2020.

The project contract is for approximately $40 million.
