Road dedicated to Nassau County deputy killed in line of duty

Community honors fallen deputy by naming stretch of road Eric Oliver Way

YULEE, Fla. – The Nassau County community honored a deputy killed in the line of duty by dedicating a stretch of road in his name.

Deputy Eric Oliver was killed Nov. 22 when he was struck by an SUV while chasing an illegal immigrant across State Road 200 in Yulee.

During Monday's dedication ceremony, Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said Oliver died doing what he loved to do: protecting the community.

That's why community members wanted to give back. With the help of county commissioners and the Nassau County Professional Fire Union, they raised the money and bought signs to name a stretch of road Eric Oliver Way.

"It was an honor," said Doug Oliver, his father. "It was an unexpected honor for something that's going to be there for as long as the road's here."

Eric Oliver Way connects State Road 200 to Courtney Isles Way by the Target shopping center. It's about 3 miles from the location where Oliver was struck and killed last year.

"This is a tragedy you never want to see happen, especially for law enforcement officer," Leeper said. "Our community is supporting us and it makes me feel good."

Oliver's family members said they're still heartbroken.

"The family is taking it basically one day at a time," Doug Oliver said.

Law enforcement agencies and community members said the dedication will keep Oliver's memory alive.

"Super proud of him -- super proud. HE did a good job and we're constantly reminded of the good job that he did," Doug Oliver said. "He loved to have fun. It didn't matter what he was doing -- law enforcement or military or just at home with his daughter -- he always wanted to have some fun."

Oliver is survived by his wife and daughter.

As for the man who he was chasing, Francisco Portillo-Fuentes is currently serving a two-year sentence for illegal re-entry and will be deported back to El Salvador. The State Attorney's Office is reviewing the case to determine if he will face any state charges related to Oliver's death.Â
