CLEARWATER, Fla. - One man was killed and two teenagers injured when a single-engine plane en route to Florida from Chicago crashed near Tampa early Saturday morning.

Authorities say the Piper PA-28 crashed about 4 a.m. near the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, which was its destination.

According to the Clearwater Police Department, the aircraft struck power lines and came to a rest on the median of a six-lane street.  Firefighters responded and extinguished several small fires from debris on the road.

Pilot Jeffrey Bronken, 53, was killed in the crash. Katherine Bronken and Keyana Linbo -- both 15 -- were injured and taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.

All three are from Round Lake, Ill., about 50 miles north of Chicago.

The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting an investigation.
