JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A dog that was stabbed several times, stuffed in a suitcase and left clinging to life in an abandoned South Florida building has died.

Despite life-saving efforts, Ollie the pit bull terrier died of his injuries Thursday night at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital, the hospital announced in a news release.

"Our team of specialists, emergency doctors and staff worked for over an hour to keep Ollie with us. His body simply could not overcome the inflammation and damage to his body caused by this horrific ordeal," the release said.

Ollie was found early Tuesday when Hollywood police answering a call to a vacant building heard the dog yelp and noticed his paw jutting out of the suitcase, Local10.com reports.

A veterinarian determined the dog, which had several deep wounds on his head and body, had been stabbed and beaten.

Detectives are still investigating in the hopes of bringing the individual or people responsible for the dog's abuse to justice.

"We share in the mourning of this sweet and innocent animal that gave only love, even in the darkest moments," the hospital said.
