Crews battle 2 brush fires in Putnam County

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – Crews on Tuesday battled two brush fires burning in Putnam County, according to Putnam County Fire Rescue. 

As of 7:40 p.m., a 200-acre brush fire on Arrowhead Point Road near Vause Lake Road in Hawthorne was 40 percent contained.

Putnam County Fire Rescue Chief Paul Flateau told News4Jax that lines were around 100 percent of the blaze, and crews were working on mopping up. 

Flateau said the flames spread very quickly. 

In the eastern part of the county, Flateau said, a 3-acre brush fire was burning at Hunter and Radcliff roads near State Road 20 in Palatka. 

As of 7:40 p.m., the blaze was 100 percent contained. 

At one point, Flateau said, a nearby home was threatened by the flames, but firefighters were able to defend the structure and prevent any damage

According to Fire Rescue, people who live near both fires were warned as a precaution that they may have to evacuate, but no evacuations have been ordered at this time.
