Deputies: 1 dead, 2 arrested after shooting in Interlachen

Putnam County deputies say incident started as attempted armed robbery

INTERLACHEN, Fla. – One man died and two were arrested after an attempted armed robbery in Interlachen, authorities with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Deputies learned of the Monday incident at 506 Marion Ave., and went to investigate.

Officials have since determined, based on a preliminary investigation, that three people drove to the home on Marion Avenue to rob someone of narcotics, deputies said.

During the robbery attempt, gunfire was exchanged between the people responsible for the crime and someone inside the home.

Deputies then found a man dead in a vehicle, just a short distance from the house.

The car was in the roadway. Authorities haven’t released the man’s name.

The other two suspects who ran from the car were identified as Michael Anthony Watson, 42, and Willie Anthony Williams, 25.

A St. Johns County Sheriff's Office helicopter and Putnam County Sheriff's Office K-9 units searched the area. The helicopter also helped locate a car, which investigators believe was being used to pick up the two men, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Investigators eventually caught up with Watson and charged him with one count of robbery with a firearm and one count of felony murder due to the death of the individual who died during the commission of the crime, a news release said.

Williams, who was shot in the shoulder and leg during the incident, was treated and released from Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

He has since been arrested and booked into the Putnam County Jail on one count of robbery with a firearm and one count of felony murder.

Neither Watson nor Williams was given the chance to post bond.
