ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. - Two people were killed in a car crash on I-95 in St. Johns County Thursday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 2011 GMC Sierra was traveling Northbound in the middle lane on Interstate 95 around 2:05 p.m. Thursday.

Directly behind the pickup was a motor home.

Both vehicles had entered a work zone area located at mile marker 328, which had the inside lane closed to traffic.

Shortly after entering the work zone area, the driver of the motor home swerved to the left, entering the safety zone, to avoid colliding with stopped traffic. At the same time, the pickup entered the safety zone in front of the motor home and came to a stop.

Unable to stop in time, the front of the motor home struck the rear of the pickup. The pickup then entered the center median and struck the guardrail as it traveled Northbound.

The pickup came to final rest in the center median North of the area of collision.

The motor home continued Northbound in the inside emergency lane before coming to a stop north of the area of collision.

The pickup truck was driven by 61-year-old David Wilkinson of Virginia and and the passenger was 61-year-old Mary Shaffer of Tennessee. They both suffered fatal injuries.

The driver and passenger of the motor home were not injured.
