ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Residents in a home on Duval Street told St. Johns County detectives they heard banging on their door just before 9 p.m. and someone shout "Police, police" before at least two armed men burst in.

A family friend visiting the home -- 32-year-old Jamar Hamilton -- exchanged gunfire with the intruders and was struck in the abdomen by a bullet.

Hamilton was transported by ambulance to UF Health in Jacksonville, where he remains in serious but stable condition. The Sheriff's Office says it is unclear if any of the suspects were shot during the encounter.

Detectives say they suspect the incident was an attempted robbery and may be narcotics related.
