ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A 52-year-old woman is charged with abusing her granddaughter after a school nurse reported to officials the girl had a large bruise on her back.

St. Augustine police said staff at Webster Elementary School observed the child was withdrawn and quiet. When asked what was wrong, the girl said her back hurt.

Police say an examination in  nurse's clinic showed a 4-inch by 2-inch red and purple bruising up and down her back. When asked, the child said her grandmother had hit her with a belt.

Earlier that morning while getting the child ready for school the girl's mother also saw the bruising and asked her mother, Debra O'Sickey, who stated that the child had fallen on a toy.

Photos were taken and placed into evidence and detectives from the St. Augustine Police Department obtained an arrest warrant.

O'Sickey was arrested and booked into the St. Johns County Jail, where bond was set at $10,000.

O'Sickey is also the grandmother of 2-year-old Dixie Wallace, who has made a full recovery after being pulled unconscious from a retention pond behind O'Sickey's home in late January. Her story was told earlier this month in a special report titled Dixie's Miracle.
