St. Augustine man killed in hit-and-run

SAPD: Witnesses saw car run over man, 49

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – St. Augustine police are searching for the driver of a car that ran over a man who was laying in the middle of the road early Sunday morning.

Chris Miller with the St. Augustine Police Department said Christian Schroom, 49, was spotted in the middle of Anastasia Boulevard near Arredondo Avenue just after midnight, next to his bicycle.

Witnesses told police they were trying to assist Schroom when on on-coming car ran over him without stopping. Investigators are not sure if the impact is what killed Schroom, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are trying to obtain video surveillance from businesses in the area, as well as traffic cameras on The Bridge of Lions to try and identify the vehicle that left the scene.

Miller said Schroom's bicycle did not receive any damage and that the man was wearing protective and reflective gear. Police said evidence collected at the scene indicates that Schroom was not riding his bicycle when he was struck.

Schroom is a St. Augustine resident and works at a nearby Red Lobster seafood restaurant. Police said he was leaving work when the incident occurred.
