St. Augustine police warn against attempted fraud callers

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The St. Augustine Police Department has issued a warning concerning two different cases of attempted fraud.

In both cases, the victim was contacted by phone. The person on the other end claimed the victim either owed money or had won money.

The victims were instructed to go a local store and purchase a "Green Dot" card and put money on that card. They were then told to call back to a number and give the caller the PIN number of the card.

In both cases, the victim believed the story, but later became suspicious and stopped all contact with the caller.

In one case, the victim was elderly; the other had very little English skills.
