St. Johns County schools installing more portable classrooms

37 new classrooms to cost $2.9M, school district says

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – St. Johns County remains one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation, and its school system is no exception.

The St. Johns County School District is facing growing pains while struggling to keep up with the demand for more space.

News4Jax on Friday took a look at the temporary solution and what it's costing the district.

"Relocatable facilities," also known as portable classrooms, are a common sight on campuses across the county.

The district said they're critical to St. Johns County schools and are not going anywhere anytime soon.

According to the school district, its continued growth means even more of the portable classrooms are needed. That's why the district is installing 37 new classrooms.

The cost runs around $20,000 on average to install just one. To lease new classrooms with restrooms built in, it's around $866 a month.

According to the district, the total cost is $2.9 million.

A school district official said despite two brand-new schools opening this year, the relocatable classrooms are still expected to be needed long-term.
