Stabbing suspect dies after being shot by officer

FDLE investigates officer-involved shooting at Winter Garden apartment

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A man suspected of stabbing his roommate died Wednesday morning after being shot by a Winter Garden police officer, officials say.

Lt. Scott Allen said the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Park Avenue Villas off South Park Avenue in Winter Garden.

According to police, a man called 911 reporting that he had been stabbed by his roommate inside their third-floor apartment.

An officer arrived and a confrontation ensued with the roommate, according to police, who added that the officer shot the man one time in the upper body. Police said the suspect ran toward the officer, but they would not say if he was armed of if he threatened the officer.

"I don't think [the officer] should have killed him. He could have defended himself or shot him in the leg," said neighbor Dalila Diaz.

Both the stabbing victim and the man shot by the officer were taken to a hospital. The man who was shot later died.  Police say the stabbing victim was in stable condition.

According to investigators, they have been able to talk with the stabbing victim but have not yet released any details.  Police are working to determine what led to the stabbing.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, and the officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Police tell Local 6 the officer is an experienced member of the force and this is the first time he's had to fire his gun at someone.  Allen said to his knowledge the officer has never been disciplined by the department.

Police have not yet released any names.
