TAMPA, Fla. - Tampa police are investigating on Friday after a family of four was hospitalized after eating meat contaminated with LSD.
Tampa police say the family of four ate the tainted meat and became ill Monday.
Ronnie Morales was the first in the family to feel sick shortly after dinner, police said. He called 911 but felt so ill that his girlfriend, Jessica Rosado, drove him to St. Joseph's Hospital.
After they arrived, Rosado, who was nine months pregnant, came down with symptoms. She was taken across the street to St. Joseph's Women's Hospital and doctors induced her labor.
That evening, her 7- and 6-year-old daughters began hallucinating and feeling ill, police said. The children and Morales were hospitalized. They remained in the hospital until Wednesday.
WFST-TV reported Rosado had a healthy baby boy. She and the newborn were released Thursday.
The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office reported Friday that the meat had been contaminated with the hallucinogenic drug.
Police say the bottom round steak was purchased from a Walmart located at 1501 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. The store has turned over all its meat to police for testing.
Walmart officials released a statement Friday evening saying its meat supplier has told the company it hasn't received reports of similar incidents elsewhere. The store is reviewing its surveillance video to find anything that would assist in the police's investigation.
Local police, along with county health officials and state and federal agriculture officials, are investigating how the drug got into the meat.
