UF police officer dies in traffic accident

Wife unhurt in single-vehicle crash in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. - A University of Florida police officer died Friday after losing control of his pickup truck on rainy East-West Expressway in Orlando.

Jean-Guy Deffense's pickup was on the ramp to enter the Florida Turnpike about 3 p.m. when it rolled over and hit a metal light pole and landed on its roof.  The Florida Highway Patrol said the 43-year-old died.

His passenger, his 45-year-old wife Marcia Wolf, was not hurt. Both were wearing seat belts.

Deffense had been with the university police for more than four years and served on the department's honor guard and on a team of sharpshooters

He was not on duty at the time of the crash.
