Woman sentenced for fatal accident at Tampa traffic stop

Woman gets life for fatal crash during escape

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - A Tampa Bay area woman has been sentenced to life in prison for causing a fatal crash while fleeing authorities.

A Hernando County judge sentenced 23-year-old Brittany Miles on Thursday after a jury convicted her of first-degree felony murder.

Authorities say Miles was pulled over by a Pasco County deputy for possible DUI in May 2011. She was handcuffed and placed in the back of the deputy's cruiser but managed to escape and drive off. The deputy was seriously injured when she was dragged while trying to stop the truck.

After getting away from the deputy, authorities say Miles made her way to Hernando County, where she hit and killed 67-year-old motorcyclist Henry McCain.

Thursday's conviction follows a 15-year sentence Miles received in December for the deputy's injuries.
