Fugitive who escaped from hospital, crashed into sheriff's vehicle arrested, police say

Richard Westervelt faces multiple charges

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – A wanted man who fled from the scene after crashing into an unmarked Flagler County Sheriff's vehicle was arrested on Monday, police said.

Richard Westervelt, 25, was being held in the Flagler County Detention Facility when he complained of chest pains. He was taken to Florida Hospital Flagler. A judge authorized his temporary release so that Flagler taxpayers would not be responsible for his medical bills. Once Westervelt was medically cleared on July 7, he took off from the hospital, knocking over a nurse in the process, according to authorities. Felony battery on a health services provider charges have been filed.

Three days later, Westervelt crashed his car into an unmarked sheriff's vehicle on U.S. 1 in Flagler County, then drove away, police said. Ormond Beach police caught up to him and took him into custody, booking him into the Volusia County Jail.

Westervelt was previously wanted on a Flagler County warrant for bond revocation for fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of hydrocodone, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and knowingly operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

In addition to the warrant, Ormond Beach police have charged Westervelt with fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident and knowingly operating a vehicle with a suspended license.
