The shift is needed so construction crews can continue an expansion and improvement project on the bridge.

The subcontractor for the project was delayed and wasn't able to get to Jacksonville until Friday, but the project was delayed again because of the weather, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

The traffic shift on the southbound side won't occur until the project begins, but FDOT did not have a timetable for when they would happen. FDOT said it did not expect the delay in the traffic shift to affect the completion date of the project.

Southbound traffic will shift onto the inside lanes of the bridge from Park Street to just south of San Marco Boulevard. The process for the traffic shift will begin around 8 p.m. Friday and end around 6 a.m. Saturday, as crews take down the existing stripes, and put down new stripes shifting traffic. The bridge will remain open during the shift, but drivers can expect lane closures and delays. The shift in traffic will remain in place for about two years, depending on weather and unforeseen delays.

The widening and improvement project began in May. The project includes an added lane in each direction, along with a "Shared Use Path" on the southbound side for pedestrians and bicyclists, connecting Riverside and San Marco communities. The project is expected to be finished in summer of 2020.

FDOT hired Archer Western as the contractor to complete the project for $126 million.
