Camden voters picking new probate judge

Sales tax extension approved; Kingsland voters OK Sunday alcohol sales

KINGSLAND, Ga. – Two of six candidates for Camden County's special election Tuesday for probate judge will meet again next month in a runoff.

In unofficial results, Robert "Bo" Sweat received 38 percent of the vote and Martin Turner finished with 20 percent.   Allison Crews, Debbie Middleton, Shavon Gibbs and Rich Gamble split the rest of the votes.

Under Georgia law, if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote the top two will face each other into a runoff.  Sweat, a lawyer, and Tuner, co-owner of an air conditioning company, will meet April 16 in runoff.

The special election was needed to replace Probate Judge Martin Gillette, who agreed to stay on temporarily when the woman elected last November to replace Gillette -- his longtime assistant, Shirley Wise -- pleaded guilty to three criminal charges shortly after last November's election.

Also Tuesday, Camden County voters overwhelmingly passed a six-year extension of a special sales tax and approved Sunday alcohol sales in Kingsland.

The sales tax revenue would fund roads, bridges, drainage, water and sewer improvements.
