Glynn County names interim police chief

John Powell to take over for retiring Chief Matt Doering

GLYNN COUNTY, Ga. – As Glynn County Police Department Chief Matt Doering prepares for his retirement, effective Sept. 30, the county manager on Monday named John Powell as the interim police chief, officials announced.

Powell will serve in the interim role through this phase of the transition.

County Manager Alan Ours said he is confident in Powell’s extensive background in law enforcement management, and said Powell is uniquely situated to fill the role of interim chief.

“Although we are sad to see Chief Doering retire after more than three decades of service to Glynn County, I have full confidence that Mr. Powell will be able to lead the department through this time,” Ours said.

Powell was hired by the county as director of community services on Jan. 4, 2016. He has managed and supervised all operational areas of the department, including fire, emergency medical services, emergency management/homeland security, animal control and recreation services, officials said.

He previously worked as the director of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Powell has also served as chief of police for Dothan, Alabama; Wilson, North Carolina; and Hartsville, South Carolina. Powell holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a masters degree in public administration. He is certified as a peace officer in the state of Georgia.
