Green Cove Springs extends medical marijuana ban

City Council extends ban for six months, now through May 2018

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – The city of Green Cove Springs will continue to ban medical marijuana dispensaries within the city limits for another six months.

The City Council debated the issue at their meeting on Tuesday. This is the second time the city has passed a moratorium. The first was set to expire in November. This new moratorium would extend it to mid-May 2018.

At Tuesday night’s meeting, members of the council expressed concern about allowing marijuana dispensaries to set up shop in Green Cove Springs at this point.

The council is waiting for more guidance from the state of Florida on how to implement the voter-approved Amendment 2. The vote by Green Cove Springs is the opposite of what Orange Park did Tuesday at their meeting where the town Commission voted to allow medical marijuana dispensaries to set up.

The meeting Tuesday night had a tiny crowd, with minimal input from the public. There were also members of the Green Cove City Council who expressed interest in an outright ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.
