JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville citizen was honored Thursday for his bravery in assisting a Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer with the arrest of a serial burglary suspect.

In March, Tony Self heard commotion outside of his Arlington home. When he went outside, he said he found Officer Philip Rossomano and his K9, Kaine, attempting to take a burglary suspect into custody.

The suspect attempted to drive off but crashed into a pole and almost struck the officer and his K-9. Police said the suspect got out of his vehicle and hit Kaine, injuring his ear and became combative. That's when Self stepped in to help.

"As the struggle progressed, he (Rossomano) asked Tony to intervene," said Sheriff Mike Williams. "Philip directed Tony on what to do and Tony, with no regard for his own safety, assisted in holding the suspect down until backup officers arrived on the scene."

Thursday, Self was given a certificate of appreciation and Officer Rossomano was given the Peer Achievement Award during JSO's award ceremony.
