JSO officer charged with theft, misconduct

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 14-year veteran of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has been arrested on theft and misconduct charges, Undersheriff Pat Ivey announced Thursday.

Officer Adam Boyd, who works on patrol in the Arlington area, is charged with one count each of grand theft, petit theft and official misconduct.

He was arrested Thursday morning and had bonded out of jail by 3 p.m.

Ivey said Boyd, 44, received payment from private businesses for security work, despite not showing up for the jobs.

The grand theft felony charge was for $540 of unearned pay, and the petit theft misdemeanor charge was for $271 of unearned pay, Ivey said. The threshold between petty theft and grand theft is $300.

The official misconduct charge stemmed from Boyd falsifying the records to show he was at the jobs, Ivey said.

“There was a separate, non-related allegation of misconduct, (a) complaint (against Boyd),” Ivey said. “We began conducting that investigation, and in doing that investigation, (we) uncovered this.”

Boyd is currently suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. If he wishes to continue his employment with JSO after the criminal investigation is over, he will have to go through an administrative-review process, Ivey said.

In March 2014, Boyd was named police officer of the month after arresting a burglary suspect. He received the award from then-Sheriff John Rutherford.
