JSO: Woman uses 2 guns to shoot man she called 'robber'

Robbery unit investigating incident on Spring Glen Road

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman used two guns and fired more than a dozen shots Wednesday at a man she says was robbing her home on Spring Glen Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

According to a police report released Thursday, the homeowner, George Porter, said that when he answered a knock at the door just after noon, a man he didn't know pushed through the door and asked for someone specific. Porter said when he told the man he didn't know who that was and began closing the door, the man pulled out a gun and said, "This is a robbery, give it up."

Officers said his wife, Jessica Porter, heard the commotion, came out of the bedroom with a gun and started shooting at the robber, who returned fire. According to the report, the Porters said the man started shooting back, so Jessica went back into the bedroom to get a second gun, then continued to fire at the intruder.

The alleged intruder, whose name has not been released, was shot more than a dozen times. He was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with what police described as critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Neither of the homeowners were injured.

Police talked to neighbors, who said they heard no gunshots coming from the house on Wednesday, but did hear gunshots from there between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday.

"You constantly hear guns, automatic gunshots going off at this house," said a neighbor who asked not to be identified. "Three or four times a week. You know they got something going on over there. Not sure what happened to cause this today."

Porter said he and his wife have only been living in the house for about a year.

A woman who used to live next door to the home, said the home was always busy when she lived in the neighborhood, which she called "really bad."

"There was always tons of vehicles coming and going, 3 to 4 o'clock in the morning, loud parties all the time, gunshots all the time, and that's why I moved because I didn't want to live in that environment with my children," said Tina, who asked News4Jax not to use her last name.

Neighbors agreed random gunfire is common in the neighborhood.

"They take guns for a joke," Tina said. "The bullets have to go somewhere and you don't just shoot guns for nothing."

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said once the investigation is finished, the State Attorney's Office will decide whether the shooting was justified.
