FHP: SUV ran red light; charges pending

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 26-year-old driver was killed and her passenger critically injured early Sunday morning when they were hit by an SUV that failed to stop for a red light on Philips Highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP report said Janet Middleton was turning off Cypress Plaza onto Philips just after 2 a.m. when her car was struck by a Ford Explorer driven by Jessamyn Sanders.

Janet Middleton was pronounced dead at the scene by Jacksonville Fire and Rescue. Her passenger, Kareem Middleton, 25, was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with critical injuries. Troopers did not indicate the relationship between the two victims.

Sanders was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to the FHP.

The accident report indicates the results of blood-alcohol testing on Sanders are pending and charges may follow.
