JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man and woman -- both 67 years old -- were found dead in a Northwest Jacksonville home Wednesday afternoon.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide investigators were called to 3800 Ernjo Road just after 1 p.m. They called the circumstances of the deaths suspicious.
Family members said Oscar Tinsley shot and killed his wife, Nancie Johnson-Tinsley, then himself.
Police did not immediately confirm that information.
Oscar Tinsley (pictured in JSO booking photo) was arrested in February on a charge of domestic battery on his wife. Court records show he pleaded no contest. In 1998, Nancie Johnson-Tinsley was granted a protective injunction, which remained in effect for one year.
The couple had been married for 40 years, and family members said the two were supposed to be hosting a family reunion soon.
"That's even more sad," said neighbor Ruben Brooks. "Everybody's here now coming up for a reunion -- now they're coming up for two funerals."
While some neighbors knew of Oscar Tinsley's past domestic violence, others had no idea. And they were shocked to find out the couple they knew so well was dead.
"Their son and daughter grew up with my son," said neighbor Shondriel Robinson. "They stayed down there for hours playing, so we never knew there was an issue."
Police are continuing to collect evidence from inside the home in the quiet neighborhood where neighbors said gun violence just doesn't happen very often.
"He was a very nice guy," said neighbor Cynthia Hudson. "I never thought it would be that way. Never thought it would happen like that."
