JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The driver of a white pickup truck flagged down a community service officer on Wilson Boulevard at Interstate 295 early Tuesday evening after a passenger in the pickup was shot, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.

According to police, the driver told the officer that his friend, the passenger in the pickup, was shot by two men who approached the vehicle from behind while it was parked on Duclay Forest Drive.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver said he was taking his friend to UF Health hospital about 6 p.m. when he spotted the community service officer, got off I-295 and flagged down the officer on Wilson Boulevard -- about 5 miles away from where the shooting happened.

Police said the passenger, who was described as a man in his early 20s, suffered serious injuries to his torso and was undergoing surgery at last check.

The driver was not injured.
