JSO investigating midday shooting in Springfield

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville police are searching for the gunmen that fired dozens of bullets in a Springfield neighborhood in the middle of the day

Neighbors told News4Jax they hid in their homes after hearing more than 10 gunshots just before 11 a.m.

One man said he hid inside as bullets went through his walls.

“I heard a series of loud bangs,” the homeowner said. “Which I thought were gunshots after around the 10th one. I think there were around 30. I waited for those to subside, went into another room in the house and there were bullet holes coming through the wall in the front.”

Investigators marked at least 26 bullet fragments on the street of the neighborhood.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said no one was injured but that several people had been detained as a part of the investigation.

Officers with JSO said the shooting happened in different spots throughout the neighborhood.

“We had several different areas where shell casings were…so we are still trying to piece everything together,” said Sgt. Brandi Merritt.

The shooting happened while there was a funeral going on right up the street.

People attending said they had to shelter inside while the shooting was happening.

News4Jax is still waiting to hear from JSO on potential suspects, charges and the motivation behind the shooting.
