LONGWOOD, Fla. - A woman walking her dog was mauled by a bear about 8 p.m. Monday night, according to Seminole County Fire Rescue officials.

According to fire rescue and wildlife officials, 54-year-old Susan Chalfant was attacked, causing significant wounds to her face.

The woman was able to run to a neighbor's house and 911 was called. She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious facial injuries, but her overall condition is unknown.

The dog was not harmed.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers are patrolling the neighborhood and talking with residents about protective measures.

A FWC bear biologist set up a trap in the yard where the bear was last seen, which will be monitored throughout the day Tuesday.  If it is caught, it will be relocated or put down.
