Body of missing swimmer found

16-year-old pulled by rip current Friday

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. - Early Sunday morning, police say the body of a 16-year-old swimmer missing since Friday was been found near Fort Clinch State Park on the north end of Amelia Island.

On Friday afternoon, Fernandina Beach police and fire crews assisted in locating a swimmer in distress. An adult witness, John Kirkland, told police that he was in the surf swimming with Dylan McCormick and another child and noticed a rip current pulled Dylan away from the shore.

Kirkland said he saw Dylan struggling to stay above the water and said that he was able to grab him at one point, but was unable to hold on to him.

He tried to get help.

Local agencies who assisted in the search for Dylan included Nassau County Sheriff's Office, the United States Coast Guard, and Florida Wild Life Commission.
