Families of crime victims release balloons in honor of their slain loved ones.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - As part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, members of the local organization Families of Slain Children gathered Friday afternoon to honor slain loved ones.

They did so with a balloon release as families reliving memories of relatives that will never fade.

The names on the memorial wall may not mean a lot to the public, but one name added Friday means everything to 8-year-old Aleanah Warnke. Her father, Kahron Warnke, was killed in March during a road rage shooting.

"I try not to cry sometimes, but I have to," she said.

Aleanah was sitting in the car and watched as her dad was shot to death.

"It's very important to me because it's my daddy and I miss him very much," Aleanah said of her dad's name being added to the memorial wall at Families of Slain Children in Northwest Jacksonville.

Aleanah's mother, Shaniqua Brown, said memorial events like this are keeping the family together.

"People make judgements and make comments about his character, but he was my husband. He was a father," Brown said. "And to keep his memory alive and to try to make something positive out of this is amazing."

Another name also added to the crowded wall was that of David Galarriago, the 2-year-old half brother of Cristian Fernandez, who detectives said killed by his brother.

No family members were at the memorial, but detectives handling the case came out to remember him.

State Attorney Angela Corey was also there and said the wall represents everyone.

"Until someone sees a victim's pain straight in their eye, they don't understand what it's like for them not only to lose their loved one, but to fight the court system," Corey said. "And so it's our joy to fight that battle for them and take these cases to court for them."
