JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Thursday marked one year since 14-year old Megan Simmons was taken off life support.
The Jacksonville teen fought for life for four days after she was shot along with her friend, Jazmine Shelton, inside of a Northwest Jacksonville trailer. The killer has not yet been caught.
Megan Simmons' mother, aunt and grandmother released balloons Thursday to honor her life and memory. They said the days without her aren't getting easier. But their fight for justice will never stop.
"She was my life," said Kylie Simmons, Megan's mother. "She was my everything. My best friend. They took that away from me."
For Megan's aunt, Neta Sessions, one of the hardest things is knowing that the person responsible is still out there.
"When this person does get charged, you know, that family, I feel sorry for them in a way. But then again, I don't because they'll still get to see their child," Sessions said.
Even though the pain of losing Megan is still very raw, it brings her family comfort knowing that through the donation of her organs, she helped save 70 lives.
"That's the one thing I wish is that someone could have had her eyes, because if I could look into them again it would mean something, you know," Sessions said.
No matter what, Megan's family vows to fight for justice.
"I know she's with me right now," Kylie Simmons said. "It'll never be the same. I just want answers."
