GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Former University of Florida quarterback Doug Johnson stands accused of felony battery by Gainesville police following an attack that left a Gators fan hospitalized, a police spokesman told WKMG-TV.

Joe Cappelletti, 28, told police he was a victim of an unprovoked attack right after the UF-LSU game in October. At the time, Cappelletti said his nose was broken in eight places and that he required surgery.

When WKMG first broke the story last October, police didn't have suspects identified, but after continuing to work the case, police identified Johnson (pictured, right) as their suspect and in November filed charges with the state attorney's office serving Alachua County.

Johnson, 35, who played for the Atlanta Falcons for five years after his time with the Gators, pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to Alachua County court records. In addition to police charging the former Gators quarterback, a second suspect was also charged, according to a GPD spokesman.

As the process plays out in court, Cappelletti said he's hoping for justice.
