Gunman demands money from Orange Park hotel

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – A man with an assault rifle entered the Hilton Garden Inn on Park Avenue early Thursday, but fled when the clerk locked herself in a back room, according to the Orange Park Police Department.

Chief Gary Goble said the man came in just before 4 a.m. and asked for a room.

"The clerk said, 'We don't have any rooms, but I'd be glad to help you find one,'" Goble said. "At that point he laid a rifle up on the counter pointed toward her and asked for the cash."

The clerk told him the safe was in the back room and she would go get money, but locked herself in and called police.

The gunman left before police arrived. No money was taken and no one was injured.

The attempted robber is described as a black man in his 20s, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 140 pounds, with thick curly hair and a thin mustache. He also appeared to have a thin beard and was wearing a black DGK brand "Field of Dreams" T-shirt, black jogging pants with white stripes and a camouflage cap.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Orange Park Police Department at 904-264-5555.
