JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It's been nearly eight months since 17-year-old JaNay Jackson died after a van came crashing through her home at Kennerly and Barnes roads on the Southside.
Just last month, a similar crash happened at the same house. Neighbors in the area are still shaken up.
"I think it's the most tragic thing. It's tragic to lose a child any time, but in a situation like that, I really think it's terrible," said one neighbor who didn't want to be identified. "I really feel sympathy for them."
The city has since said it's working to curb traffic at the busy intersection. Two suggestions have been to add rumble strips and a "stop ahead" sign.
It's frustrating for those who live in the area.
"I know they have a lot of things to do and a lot of priorities, but I think this is one since these people have been hit twice," the neighbor said.
Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson says those neighbors need to speak up.
"Our citizens need to be in the face ofCity Hall, in the face of their council person, pushing legislation to get something done about this so there won't be another fatality," Jefferson said.
Ismet Sijamhodzic (pictured, left), the man police say was driving when Jackson died, has been charged with vehicular homicide. On Monday, his wife apologized to the family.
"I feel sorry for the girl and her parents," Sanita Sijamhodzic said. "I wanted to tell Ms. Jackson I feel sorry for all of them, and one day I wish I could see her and grieve with her and give her flowers, me and my kids."
